Cisco 2501 Configuration - Restoring Passwords

Procedure :

  1. Power down
  2. Power up
  3. During boot-up, press [Ctrl]+[Break]
  4. At the router prompt, key in "o/r 0x42". Press [Enter]
  5. Key in "i", for "initialise", press [Enter]
  6. System will go into Setup. Press "n" for "no" to all options
  7. At the router prompt, key "enable"
  8. router prompt, key in "configure memory"
  9. router prompt, key in "show config". You should see the passwords for "secret" and "password". "Secret" is the highest level of security, followed by "password" which is the lowest level of security. Actually only one option should be enabled. Not both.
  10. router prompt, key in "config t", press [Enter]
  11. router prompt, key in "enable secret password", where password is the new password for the router's highest security level
  12. router prompt, key in "enable password password", where password is the new password for the router's lowest security level
  13. router prompt, key in "config-register 0x2102", press [Enter]
  14. Press [Ctrl]+[Z] to quit from Setup
  15. router prompt, key in "write memory", press [Enter]
  16. router prompt, key in "reload", press [Enter]
  17. System will reboot.
  18. login as per normal with new password
  19. continue router configuration
